da bwin: Tottenham Hotspur have shelved any talk of transfers until after the Champions League final, per the London Evening Standard.
What’s the word?
Mauricio Pochettino’s side have not signed a new player since January 2018, when Lucas Moura arrived from PSG.
The transfer window opened on Thursday, with there being doubts over the futures of Kieran Trippier, Toby Alderweireld and Christian Eriksen at the club.
A number of targets – including Ryan Sessegnon of Fulham and Barcelona’s Andre Gomes – have been identified, per the report, but Spurs are not set to make any bids until after the final on June 1.
Spurs progressed to the showpiece after stunning wins over both Manchester City and Ajax and the club are said to be keen to keep the squad’s focus on the game, rather than their futures.
A risky game
Spurs have often operated like this.
The club rarely makes early forays into the transfer market with their last signing, Lucas, being confirmed on deadline day of the January window.
It seems like the same will be true this time around and it could ultimately have a detrimental effect on their preparations for next season.
Manager Pochettino favours a high-pressing approach that requires intense pre-season training.
Waiting until the dying moments of the transfer window to sign players, then, feels like negligence at a time when it can be ill-afforded.
One can understand focusing on the Champions League final – Spurs have a genuine opportunity to complete a triumph for the ages – but delegation is key, and there is nothing to say that chairman Daniel Levy couldn’t be pursuing deals in the meantime.
