Well that didn’t last long did it? After fighting back from his injury struggles at the back end of the last campaign to make it to pre-season, Eric Bailly has suffered yet another injury. The Ivory Coast international has had a wretched run of luck when it comes to trying to stay healthy, and it has now been confirmed that this is another serious one.
Speaking at his post-match press conference this week, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer revealed: “He’s had an operation. He’ll miss the best part of four or five months. Hopefully, we’ll get him back around about Christmas. It was positive news from the surgeon, he had the operation this morning. He was positive it was all repaired and that he’ll be fine.”

Whilst Solskjaer remained seemingly optimistic and positive in his outlook, there can be no doubting that the Red Devils’ need for another centre-back has just turned up a notch. The club are already in protracted talks to sign Leicester centre-back Harry Maguire this summer, and that is a deal that United simply need to get done in light of recent events.
But perhaps Bailly’s injury may also see United opt to sign another central defender too. Can the club seriously rely on the 25-year-old to stay fit and healthy over the course of an entire season? Whilst United should decide against him potentially selling him – after all when he has taken to the pitch, he has been one of the side’s better defenders – there should be a contingency plan for him. He has missed a whopping 313 days through injury during his time at Old Trafford, not even including this latest setback.
Benfica defender Ruben Dias has been linked with the club in recent weeks and that would undoubtedly give United another quality option at the heart of their back-line. Whilst Maguire had been a United target well before Bailly’s injury, the current situation should surely see the Red Devils dip into the transfer market once more and pursue another centre-back before the close of the window.
