da bet7: John Terry looks set to miss England’s second World Cup qualifier against Ukraine on Tuesday, and could also be forced to sit out Chelsea’s grudge match at QPR this weekend according to The Guardian.
da fazobetai: Terry is desperate to play a part in the fixture at Loftus Road, a match that would see him return to the scene of the controversial incident involving himself and Anton Ferdinand for the first time. The atmosphere is likely to be hostile non-the-less, after Terry was found not guilty of racially abusing the QPR defender in July.
Terry faces extensive treatment on the injury he picked up in Moldova, and may regret his decision to refuse coming off earlier in the match at the expense of leaving his side a man down after Hodgson had used his three substitutes.
But with the England side in cruise control, it is questionable whether Terry’s refusal to withdraw himself from the action was brave or simply stupid, with it looking as though the injury was further aggravated by his continued involvement.
Hodgson described Terry as “a warrior” after he “pooh-poohed” the idea of coming off. But the extra 20 minutes he played with the injury looks to have done further damage. The former England captain eventually withdrew himself shortly before the end, but with hindsight will regret not doing so earlier with it being such a heavily one sided match.
Gary Cahill looks set to get the nod to replace Terry, in what looks set to be Hodgson’s only change to the side that won so convincingly in Moldova.
Cahill’s Chelsea and England teammate Frank Lampard believes the former Bolton man will slot into the back four without a problem.
“Gary has grown completely as a footballer,” Lampard said. “I have nothing but massively good things to say about him. To come to Chelsea during the season we were having last year, fit in so well and produce the performances he did against Barcelona and then in the Champions League final, he has proven he is a top centre-half in world football.
“John will be a big miss because he’s a very influential, top player, and he was fantastic at the Euros under certain pressures but, luckily, we have great cover.”
Terry spent the weekend receiving extensive treatment on the injury, but with it looking as though the Ukraine match will come to soon for him, will now spend the rest of the week desperately trying to get fit for Chelsea’s visit to Loftus Road.
