da cassino: Rafael Benitez has claimed that he will remain at Newcastle United even if the takeover bid falls through, reports the Daily Mail.
What’s the latest?
da dobrowin: A frustrating transfer window led to suggestions that the manager may consider leaving the club.
Those rumours did not come true, however, and Benitez has indicated even further that he is committed to the Magpies.
Prior to Saturday’s 3-0 defeat to Watford at St James’ Park, the former Liverpool boss claimed that his future is unlikely to be determined by a failed takeover bid.
Current club owner Mike Ashley has put the North-East outfit up for sale and is in negotiations with PCP Partners, who work predominantly with Middle Eastern and Chinese investors.
According to the Daily Mail, when asked if he would still be at the club this time next year if the takeover bid collapses, Benitez said:
“I think so. I’m happy with this group of players, they’re improving, they’re learning. Was I disappointed after the lack of investment in the summer? Yes, but this is still a challenge for me.”
How should Newcastle fans process this?
In the football world, things can change very quickly, particularly when it comes to the managerial merry-go-round.
Benitez’s claims are positive, especially because of his admission that he is content with the group of players that he has.
However, the Spaniard has had problems with ownership in the past and if there is any more friction, the possibility of the manager leaving will likely return.
The main focus for Benitez right now is to get the team back to winning ways.
The club have lost their last four consecutive Premier League games and as a result have dropped to 13th in the table.
If the Magpies continue to drop points, they could find themselves in a relegation battle, of which they have so far managed to avoid.
