da betway: Chelsea are set to go toe-to-toe in the transfer market with Manchester United for the services of Benfica full-back Nelson Semedo, according to Portuguese outlet A Bola.
What’s the word?
da mrbet: Heavily linked with Manchester United at the back-end of 2016, and reportedly scouted during a Champions League clash against Napoli, Jose Mourinho’s side face competition from his former employers for the full-back’s signature.
23-year-old Semedo has established himself as one of the finest young defenders in European football and his valuation has soared in recent seasons, rising to around £35m, and Antonio Conte seems intent on bolstering his defensive line with his signature.
That’s bad news for United, who have strong connections in Portugal, and the competition could see the price-tag rise further; although it’s unlikely Benfica will secure the astonishing €80m figure that stands as his release-clause.
Where’s best for Semedo?
Sorry Manchester United fans but Stamford Bridge would be best for the youngster, because of two reasons. Firstly, Champions League football, which the Red Devils are currently struggling to provide and face a huge battle in the latter months of the season.
Perhaps the most important factor though is Semedo’s position. Strong in defence but also capable of attack, and being able to play on the right-flank of midfield, Semedo could excel in Conte’s 3-5-2 formation in West London.
A defence with Cesar Azpilicueta, Kurt Zouma and David Luiz should be able to excel, especially when you add Semedo out-wide, and he’d be the ideal long-term replacing for Branislav Ivanovic, who has served the club magnificently during the past nine years.
