da marjack bet: Should he stay, or should he go?
da luck: The endless debates over the future of Arsene Wenger are continuing to bore us all, it must be said. Arsenal have underachieved to a huge degree this season and it looks as though the #WengerOut gang are growing in stature and size. In a year where Tottenham and Leicester are fighting for the title, Arsenal’s post-Christmas choke has been more disappointing than ever, and Wenger is under serious pressure. The club that charges more per ticket than anyone else in England are having to defend every decision of late as another early Champions League exit, a woeful FA Cup campaign and a disappointing league season leave the Gunners in big club mediocrity.
Many will applaud a manager recording yet another top four finish, but Wenger should see this season as his biggest failure considering the weaknesses shown by both Manchester clubs and Chelsea. The January window saw the arrival of Mohamed Elneny, but Wenger failed to splash the cash as the fans had desired once again. The Frenchman will never have another chance to win the league like he did this season.
The only way Arsenal can compete next season is with investment… big investment.
We bring you FIVE stars that would transform this Arsenal side..
Ruben Neves
While the teenage obsession in the UK has been from Arsenal’s north London rivals, Ruben Neves is clearly one of the most gifted players in the world at the moment.
Already being given huge responsibility in the Porto team, Neves has a massive future at the highest level and is likely to make a big move over the next couple of years as he looks to establish himself as one of the best midfielders in Europe. The Portuguese star is already a regular in European football and boasts a passing range usually associated with the true deep lying icons of the modern game.
Neves might not be an immediate starter, but the youngster would give Wenger another option in the middle of the park and provide a creative option from deep that Francis Coquelin does not offer.
Karim Bellarabi
As Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain have had largely unimpressive campaigns, the call for Arsenal to add another speed merchant seems sensible.
Bellarabi has provided 10 goals and 10 assists in all competitions this season and the Bayer Leverkusen man is the sort of player who could stretch the game whether played on the right or left flank and, ideally, create more space for the magnificent Mesut Ozil to operate in.
Wenger may also be tempted by some of Bellarabi’s team mates, Julian Brandt and Hakan Calhanoglu, who are both younger than Bellarabi (26).
Mats Hummels
It’s an annual occurrence that Mats Hummels is linked with a move from Borussia Dortmund.
Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Manchester United will probably all be aligned with the German star again this summer and we can expect the same nonsense to be printed about him. Hummels’ brilliance on the ball and cool head would suit Arsene Wenger’s ‘philosophy’ and naturally fit alongside the more limited play of Laurent Koscielny.
Although Per Mertesacker is the regular Arsenal defensive scapegoat, Gabriel’s rash challenges have been as detrimental to Arsenal as anything and the need for a centre-back doesn’t seem to be diminishing. Hummels’ ability to bring the ball out of defence will attract the majority of Europe’s top managers, although it may be tough to tempt the German to leave the Dortmund revival.
Romelu Lukaku
Everton’s domineering Belgian has been the sole spot of positive in a pretty dire campaign for the Toffees and, although he will demand a huge transfer fee, he must be near the top of Wenger’s shortlist for this summer.
Out-performing Olivier Giroud in goals per 90 and chances created, Lukaku has had to carry an Everton team that have been even more lacklustre defensively than Arsenal’s worst days with Squillaci or Senderos.
The ex-Chelsea man has entered a slightly quieter period of late, but he has still found the net 18 times in this Premier League season and led the Everton attack brilliantly. Although he is yet to develop the subtleties to his game that a world-class striker needs, Wenger would surely educate him on what is needed as centre-forward at Arsenal.
Arturo Vidal
If Arsenal feel that they need someone to replace/compete with Aaron Ramsey in the box-to-box midfield role, there are few better options than Arturo Vidal.
Although his role has changed noticeably since his move to Bayern – with a greater onus on defensive awareness – Vidal still has all the tools to be a top class player across the pitch. The Chilean has created more chances, made more key passes and been more successful in the tackle than Ramsey per 90 in the league this season.
If Wenger wants the option to sure up the midfield further, Vidal could even operate as a third man alongside Ramsey and Coquelin or Elneny.
