da mrbet: When news broke this week linking Stan Petrov with a move back to Aston Villa, it’s safe to say the footballing world had a big smile on its face.
da premier bet: The Bulgarian international midfielder was sadly diagnosed with leukaemia back in March 2012 and it was widely thought he would never make a comeback to the professional game. After his diagnosis and battle with the illness, Petrov signed with local Solihull-based Sunday League club Wychall Wanderers where he continued to pick up his fitness and old footballing skill.
He’s been clear of any drugs for over a year-and-a-half now and he announced this week that he wants to get back into professional football, ideally with former club Aston Villa.
Yet a lot has changed at Villa Park since Stan Petrov first joined the club in 2006. He’s been training with Villa’s U21 side recently and you do have to worry whether or not the club would be in this turmoil. Under his leadership, the club were strong, happy and determined. Whilst a lot of the troubles at Villa this season have come from off-the-field issues, some of the attitudes displayed on the pitch have been absolutely shocking. I fail to see how certain individuals would have been able to let their heads drop as quickly as they have done this season had Stan still been at the helm.
He’s an unbelievably hard worker and a talented passer of the ball. It will be interesting to see Petrov’s levels upon his return, whether that is in the Premier League or perhaps a little lower down the football league pyramid. Whilst he was playing local level football for a number of months, recovering the ability needed to step back up into the top leagues in the world will be terribly difficult.
But what’s most important about this story is about Stan himself – just how well he’s done to get over this horrendous condition. Many supporters will recall the moment when the Bulgarian was invited onto the Celtic Park pitch after his diagnosis. The scenes were unbelievably heartwarming and should Stan Petrov ever make a professional appearance again, it will show how determined the centre-midfielder has been.
If there is one man that Villa need right now, it’s him. Whether he comes back or not, Villa need a new breath of passion, determination and resilience as they enter the Championship – one of the most difficult leagues in the world.
If Stan does come back to Villa Park, the whole club will get a lift. To have a legend back when there have been so many lacking this season has the potential to lift spirits exponentially.
You’ve been missed, Stan.
