da dobrowin: One of the most shocking transfers at this point in the summer is Fabio Borini’s move to AC Milan. Under new Chinese ownership, the legendary Italian club is determined to retake its place among the elite European clubs and most of its transfer business this summer has reflected that.
da betway: Thus far, the club have vastly improved their defence by bringing in Argentina international centre-back Mateo Musacchio from Valencia and Swiss star Ricardo Rodriguez from Wolfsburg. In midfield, the club welcome Atalanta’s Franck Kessié, who was once targeted by the Premier League’s elite, and Turkish free-kick maestro Hakan Çalhanoglu.
The club have even added 21-year old Portugal international André Silva to its group of forwards. And then there is Borini, who never truly impressed at any point in his Premier League career, so he really doesn’t deserve this high-profile loan move.
The Italian forward struggled mightily at Sunderland last season, as did the rest of the top-flight’s worst club, but has only one above average campaign in his entire career. The 26-year old spent the 2011-12 season on loan at Roma, where he scored 10 goals across all competitions and earned his international debut along with a spot in Italy’s runner-up Euro 2012 campaign.
But that was a long time ago.
He moved to Liverpool after that Roma season and had an Anfield career to forget. After scoring just twice in 20 appearances, he was loaned to Sunderland, where his seven-goal league campaign earned him a second chance with Brendan Rogers. He fell flat again, scoring only one in 18 appearances.
The 26-year old Italian moved permanently to Sunderland and had an extremely average campaign, scoring five goals in 27 appearances, as the Black Cats narrowly avoided relegation. The club wasn’t as lucky this time around and Borini’s two league goals in over 1,700 minutes played its part. He just hasn’t been very good and he certainly doesn’t deserve to play for a club like AC Milan.
Who knows, maybe he proves his doubters wrong and performs for the Rossoneri, but he has an uphill battle to see playing time. The forward must get in ahead of €38m Silva, Carlos Bacca, Suso and M’Baye Niang, who are all superior players. The club also have Gianluca Lapadula, who scored eight goals last season and was scouted heavily by Juventus before moving to the San Siro last summer.
Borini’s move just doesn’t seem to make sense to anyone who has seen him struggle in the Premier League. Maybe playing around better players than Sunderland’s will bring out the form that earned him his only Italy cap.
Or maybe he barely sees any game tjime. Time to wait and see.
