da brwin: England boss Gareth Southgate paid tribute to Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford after his impressive international debut on Friday night.
da pinnacle: Pickford – a £30m summer arrival from Sunderland – played a key role in England keeping a clean sheet in the goalless draw with Germany at Wembley.
The 23-year-old’s standout moment came in the first period when he made a fine save to prevent Timo Werner from finding the back of the net.
Pickford has now put serious pressure on Joe Hart in the fight to be England’s number one goalkeeper for the 2018 World Cup, with Southgate revealing his delight at the stopper’s performance.
Southgate told reporters:
“I remember his first couple of games for the under-21s. You’re thinking he’s quick around the goal, he makes the saves.
“You know with goalkeepers there’s various levels, they either save the ones they should save and not much else or they go to the next level where they make match-winning saves.
“He’s certainly made really important saves tonight (Friday). And of course with his feet he gives the team a different dimension as well. I thought he could be really pleased with his performance.”
Pickford broke into Sunderland’s first team last season, and ended the campaign having made 29 appearances in the Premier League before Everton swooped to sign him.
England will again face a test of their credentials when they welcome Brazil to Wembley on Tuesday night in their last international friendly of 2018.
