da brwin: Rangers will be looking to pick up just their second win in six matches in all competitions when they travel to face St Johnstone on Sunday, and manager Steven Gerrard has quite the conundrum as to who should start on the flanks.
The Glasgow giants lifted themselves into title contention and to the top of the table in recent weeks, but after a run of taking just five points from a possible 12 – only scoring twice in the process – they are in real danger of falling behind Celtic.
On the chalkboard
In recent weeks it has been clear to see that the Scottish Premiership outfit haven’t had enough creativity or goal threat in the final third, with striker Alfredo Morelos perhaps the only guaranteed starter in Gerrard’s preferred formation that incorporates a front three right now.
Out wide, Daniel Candeias, Glenn Middleton and Eros Grezda have largely rotated, and it was Candeias and Grezda that got the nod ahead of the 18-year-old for the goalless draw against Hibernian at Easter Road on Wednesday night.
The teenager did replace Grezda in the second half as the visitors went in search of a winner, but it remains to be seen whether he has done enough to secure a start against St Johnstone this weekend with Candeias surely the one that is guaranteed a spot in the XI right now following his winner against Hamilton.
What should Gerrard do?
It’s a tough one because neither are making the required impact right now.
Of course, Middleton is still young and it is difficult to expect that consistency from him despite the quality he has shown previously, while the 38-year-old clearly needs a player like Grezda to step up to the plate if Rangers are going to be title contenders until the end.
However, with three games in the space of six days coming up and this one arguably being the easiest on paper, Gerrard should opt to give his teenage starlet another opportunity to impress, telling him to be direct and to get at the St Johnstone defence.
