da mrbet: EFL pundit Dean Ashton has a slightly different view after Aston Villa manager Dean Smith labelled Jack Grealish as the “best player in the league” last week, following an exclusive interview with Football League World.
What’s the word, then?
Well, prior to the 23-year-old’s return to action following a three-month injury absence before the Championship fixture against Derby County at Villa Park, Smith told avfc.co.uk: “But I believe Jack is the best player in the league and any team that loses that kind of quality would suffer.
“We’ve suffered a bit, so we’re looking forward to having him back.”
The Midlands club were unbeaten in six league matches prior to Grealish’s injury in December, and they went on a run of just two wins in 13 fixtures without him before he starred in the 4-0 success against the Rams last time out – scoring a stunning volley.
While Ashton acknowledges the midfielder’s quality, he has a different opinion, telling Football League World: “Smith gave him a bit more freedom and he was influential in a good start and Smith’ll have missed him too, which is probably in part as to why he’s said what he’s said.
“At his best you would say he probably could and would be the best in the division but there are others who have had a superb season too.”
Who has been the Championship’s best player this season? The Pl>ymaker FC squad discuss in the video below…
Is he right?
In terms of quality you would be hard to argue that Grealish isn’t the best player in the Championship, however there are many players who have far superior stats than the 23-year-old, which suggest that the former striker has a point that others need to be considered too.
Despite his influence, the midfielder’s total in terms of goals and assists should probably be a lot higher considering the position he plays in, and he still has plenty to prove between now and the end of the season.
