da bet7: Liverpool would have signed Jadon Sancho in 2017 had trade with Manchester City been possible, reports Melissa Reddy of The Independent.
What’s the story?
da premier bet: The Anfield outfit have been linked with a move for the 19-year-old over the past few weeks and months, although nothing official has been confirmed.
Now, Reddy says that he could have been signed in 2017 if negotiations between the Premier League’s big hitters had been possible. She says: “Liverpool would have recruited Sancho from Manchester City in the summer of 2017 if trade between the clubs was possible.”
A whole lot cheaper
Sancho has been a revelation in the Bundesliga for Borussia Dortmund since making the move. He has made 82 appearances for Die Schwarzgelben, scoring 29 goals and providing 32 assists. He has regularly made history in the German top flight – just last week he became the first player in Bundesliga history to score 25 goals as a teenager. This season alone, he has 15 goals and 16 assists in all competitions.
To think that BVB signed the youngster for just £8m. Of course, when he made the move, he was just 17 years old, and few could have predicted the impact he would make on German football.
Of course, City and Guardiola were never going to let such a star talent leave for a Premier League rival.
The Manchester club actually wanted to keep him at the Etihad Stadium, but Sancho appeared to have his heart set on moving as he saw his path to the first-team blocked by the conveyor belt of stars on offer. Just look at Phil Foden, for example. The midfielder is just two months younger than Sancho, but has started just 23 matches in all competitions for City. The winger took the plunge to move abroad, and it has paid dividends.
Now, it has been reported that Dortmund want £126m for his signature – more than 10 times what the German outfit paid to sign him.
This time, at least, Liverpool will not have to worry about whether they can sign him due to their relationship with his employers – Michael Zorc and his team will surely only look to move him on to the highest bidder.
